Carer Friendly Schools
Dudley Young Carers Service is committed to providing support, resources, and training to help schools to become Carer Friendly. With the right awareness and guidance, school’s can identify Young Carers to ensure they have access to the right support.
What are Carer Friendly Schools?
Our aim is to assist schools to recognise, understand and support Young Carers, so that caring responsibilities do not become a barrier to education, wellbeing, or future opportunities.
We help schools create a Young Carer-friendly environment where pupils feel safe to share, staff feel confident to respond, and families feel reassured that schools are there to help, not judge.
Our Training
Young Carers often take on responsibilities that can affect attendance, learning, behaviour, and wellbeing. Without the right awareness schools may not see what is happening beyond the school gates.
Our training supports early identification and a consistent whole-school response. It helps reduce stress for pupils, improve engagement and attendance, and prevent issues escalating. It also strengthens evidence of safeguarding, early help, and inclusion by embedding sustainable systems for identifying, recording, and supporting Young Carers.
What our Training Covers
Our Young Carer-Friendly Schools training is practical, accessible, and designed to fit around busy school life. It builds staff confidence, awareness, and clear next steps.
We explore what a Young Carer is, why many remain hidden, and how caring can affect school. Staff learn how to spot signs, listen for clues, and make simple changes that help.
We cover the Young Carers Champion role, the six steps to becoming a Young Carer-friendly school, and easy ways to raise awareness (assemblies, posters, and parent communication). We also guide schools on recording Young Carers (including the school census) and working with Dudley Young Carers and other services.
Sessions are interactive and discussion-based, using real-life examples and scenarios. We deliver Training on Microsoft Teams, typically lasting between 1 and 3 hours depending on your school’s needs. The training is aligned with the current Ofsted inspection framework, particularly around safeguarding, inclusion, attendance, and personal development.
