Dementia Action Week, taking place from Monday 20 May to Sunday 26 May 2025, is a national initiative led by the Alzheimer’s Society and supported by organisations, communities, and individuals across the UK.It is a vital opportunity to raise awareness, improve understanding, and inspire action to support those living with Dementia and the Carers who support them. 🧠 What is Dementia? Dementia is an umbrella term for a range of progressive neurological conditions that affect memory, thinking, behaviour, and the ability to perform everyday activities.There are many different types of Dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common. Dementia is not a natural part of ageing — it is caused by diseases of the brain.While it is more common in people over 65, younger people can also be affected. Living with Dementia can be challenging, not just for the individual, but also for the family members and friends who take on caring responsibilities. Raising awareness and promoting understanding helps create a more inclusive and supportive society for everyone affected. 💬 Why Dementia Action Week Matters Dementia Action Week is about more than just raising awareness — it is about taking action.By improving knowledge and understanding, we can tackle stigma, encourage early diagnosis, and ensure that those living with Dementia and their Carers have access to the support they need. Here are a few ways you can get involved: Together, we can create a society that is more inclusive, supportive, and empowering for those living with Dementia and their Carers. Whilst a diagnosis can be life-changing, it does not define a person.By working together, raising awareness, and taking positive action, we can build communities where everyone affected by Dementia feels valued, understood, and supported. Forward Carers is commissioned by Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council to deliver Adult Wellbeing and Young Carers services in partnership with Dudley Carers Hub. For young Carers, we provide comprehensive support, ensuring they feel valued, supported, and have the opportunities they need to thrive.
Am I a Young Carer?
A Young Carer is someone aged 5-17 who helps look after a family member or friend who has a physical disability, mental health condition, learning disability, substance misuse issue, sensory impairment, or any long-term illness. Young Carers often take on practical and emotional responsibilities that are usually expected of an adult.

If you’re a young person aged 5-17 and you’re helping look after someone at home. Our Young Carers Service is here to make sure you have fun, feel supported, and get the help you need. Here’s what we offer:
- Find Friends: Join in with our activities where you can meet other young Carers, play games, and have fun.
- Get Support: We’re here to listen and support you with anything you need.
- Learn New Things: Take part in exciting workshops and training sessions.
- Feel Confident: We’ll help you with school transitions and getting ready for future jobs.
Services include:
- Regular youth clubs for fun activities and making friends.
- Information and advice on a wide range of issues.
- Referrals to other helpful services.
- Training sessions and workshops.
- Support with school and future planning.

Teachers, healthcare providers, and other professionals play a crucial role in identifying and supporting young Carers. If you work with children, be aware of the signs that a child may be a Carer. Forward Carers offers resources and training to help professionals provide the necessary support and ensure young Carers get the help they need.
